Everyone in the office (and the world) was amazed when late rapper Tupac Shakur sang side by side to Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre in a live concert in the 2012 Coachella Music Festival. As we love all things digital we were in awe of this amazing technological advance, but I clearly remembered seeing these technique years ago in Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion. My coworkers just brushed it off as a kid’s faulty memory, but after a short research I realized that this cutting edge technology is at least 150 years old; it is an optical illusion technique that was devised by Liverpudlian engineer Henry Dircks in 1858 who called it “Dircksian Phantasmagoria” and further polished by British scientist John Henry Pepper gaining it the name of “Pepper’s Ghost”.

From the ghost of Dickenson’s play “The Haunted Man” to Tupac, the pepper’s ghost “holograms” has been used to bring the dead to life since the 19th century.

Imagineeringdisney explains the setting of the Haunted house quite thoughtfully, and wikipedia and you tubers do a wonderful job on explaining how pepper’s ghost works in general, so I won’t. But I will say that is pretty easy to set it yourself and I think that the Haunted Mansion could do with a Natural User Interface (NUI) based mirror me ghost.
