Dance Technology: Motion Meets Motion Tracking

Dance and technology

We’ve handpicked a collection of the best Dance Technology fusions. Floating human bodies  augmented by 3d projections in a fascinating display of mastery over motion.

Last week I was talking to dancer friend of mine about a project we are working on.
It was futile attempt to explain what augmented reality and NUI are.
Just as I was about to give up, she said “oooh like Chunky Moves”. I was hooked.

Motion sensors have become more accessible, and we’ve been seeing an increasing number of motion based interactive projects in a wide range of industries. But nothing compares in terms of beauty and complexity to performance arts.

Responsive projections embrace the flowing human to create a new form of art. Displaying a level of control over motion that is unprecedented. Real-time motion capture projected onto a 3d mapped surface make these projects not only mesmerizing but extremely complex.

Mortal Engine by Chunky Move

Melbourne based dancers Chunky Moves, have given life to Philip Reeve‘s Mortal Engines. With expressive choreography and dramatic graphics they have manage to communicate the essence of the novel in a truly remarkable way.

Seven Sense (Excerpt) by Anarchy Dance Theatre + UltraCombos

This Taiwanese band has created the most technically challenging piece of this collection, 3d projecting  onto three walls and the floor all synchronized with motion sensors that react accordingly to the surface they are projected onto, just WOW.

You should watch it all, but if  you must you can jump to 2:50 for the more complex part of the performance.

Apparition – Klaus Obermaier & Ars Electronica Futurelab

Apparition fuses the performers to a point where they are almost indistinguishable from the video display. The media artist, Klaus Obermaier, achieve a level of precision and interactivity that is highly immersive and visually enriching.
